By researching “UK”, you’ll quickly learn that this country is renowned for their most unpredictable weather. Having been a participant of the UK Classic in 2025, I can confirm it’s true and if you want to truly enjoy the trail, you'll need to be very ready for it!
*Spoilers alert: Below is an account of what you could expect on this incredible.
The Starter Pack at Check-in
Three most important items from the starter pack
Upon completing our registration at Muncaster Castle, we received several important items as part of the starter’s pack, to carry with us throughout the event, including: (1) a map for navigation, (2) a trekking passport to get stamps at all checkpoints for headcount tracking, and safety, and (3) an orange safety tag to be tied onto our backpack, for visibility and identification.
Other items included dried food, gas canister, a Fjällräven trash bag, and a toilet bag with toilet roll. All Fjällräven’s Classic events practice a “Leave No Trace” philosophy, so remember you'll need to carry out all your trash through to the finishing line.
Lake District Landscape
Healing Mode Activated
The official route took place in the Lake District, England's largest national park, where we were fully immersed in ancient woodlands, passing diverse sceneries: forests, meadows, mountains, hills, and lakes.
Any spot is a nice spot to relax and enjoy the moment.
Along the trail, we met lots of “meh-meh” friends, which was definitely a lovely highlight to the experience!
Fun fact: These ‘smiley face’ Herdwick sheeps are unqiuely native to the Lake District. They are famous for their grey coat, good memory and ability to survive on high, rocky hills. With that said …
Reminder: While the views are stunning, some paths can be challenging, steep and rocky. As a non-experienced trekker, I had to walk slower and be very focused on where I was stepping, especially in the rain. If anything, I’d suggest wearing a pair of stiffer mid to high cut shoes with ankle protection, will help to prevent ankles from rolling, especially when traversing through the big and small rocky path.
The Challenging
“Four Seasons” Weather
Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, the Lake District's famous "four seasons in one day" is no exaggeration. Showers and strong winds are part of the package, and if you are lucky enough, you will get to experience some hail too, and sure I was lucky enough.
Never forget to pack your rain gear, including rain cover for your bag, waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers (check out my gear list), or you'll be quite literally immersed in nature, since most of the route is barely sheltered.
On top of the weather, the temperature is another thing to note. September temperatures can swing significantly, therefore an extra insulation layer is essential for a chilly evening and morning.
Be prepared to pitch your tent under the rain, I'm pretty sure I broke my personal fastest record!
A Well-Earned Treat
Before the Finishing Line
I absolutely recommend any of you to stop by a local pub for lunch on the last day. Heading towards Muncaster Castle, we passed through a small town and stopped for hot pipping plates.
The timing couldn't have been better. The rain had been pouring all morning, and some of us were suffering from wet socks and shivering from the cold. By the time we were having lunch, thankfully the rain stopped, and the sun broke through the clouds again. With very fulfilling tummies and hearts, we set off energized for the last stretch of the journey through the woods to Muncaster Castle.
“Woo-hoo! We made it!”
As Muncaster Castle finally came into view, the excitement hit us, “Woo-hoo! We made it!”. We started running towards the finishing line, surrounded by cheers and applause from the Fjällräven staff and other participants who had just finished, officially marking the end of our unforgettable journey.
There's so much worth recalling: the incredibly supportive staff, the delicious tea and snack prepared at the checkpoints and campsites, and the friendly participants from all around the world we met along the trail…
Was it easy? Well, the weather does certainly pose a challenge in the Lake District backdrop. It’s not exactly a walk in the park. But I’ve just finished the trek, and honestly, the entire experience is one that left a mark in me — from the hailstorm, to pitching my tent under heavy rain, racing against bad weather to the campsite and the surprising sight of many adorable ‘smiley face’ sheep along the way. I see myself anticipating the unique experiences the next Classic event would bring me!
