Travelling through nature in the winter is a completely different experience than travelling during the other seasons of the year. Ice and ground frost make it possible to pass over wetlands and streams that would otherwise require long detours, and snow evens out the landscape’s contours, which means you can get around on skis. However, ice can also make paths slippery, the varying thickness of the ice on streams represents a constant risk and snow that gathers on the sides of mountains and in ravines can lead to small landslides and massive avalanches, both of which are dangerous. In other words, you need to carefully plan your trek and know how to navigate.
